I would love to learn more about Rites of Passage programs for teenagers. Anyone have any experience participating in or leading any programs like these?

I'm interested in getting involved with this work, as I have a lot of experience in social services, and would love to incorporate more "heart-centered" work.

btw, i'm in seattle and do know about a couple programs in the area.

Thanks!
how, in our culture do we know when we have graduated from boy to man? is it a gradual thing so subtle that we one day realize it has happenned without us even knowing? is it when you move out of your parents house? when you turn 18? none of these things?
what events can you look back on as a rite of passage from boy to man? What is the essence of this crucial experience?

Unfortunately Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is also an initiation in some cultures too. FGM is much worse than Male circumcision or Male Genital Mutilation (MGM).

True female circumcision that is analogous to male circumcision is removal of the clit hood or clitoral prepuce only.

Initiations certainly have proven to be effective to those who embraced them. The mystery associated with such endeavours plays an integral role in the process. It is that 'unknown' which provokes the first step into new knowledge. There are many kinds of initiation, but they all have to do with the expansion of consciousness and the grace that is derived from understanding.

Society at large can benefit from such activities, but the number of those who will seek initiation actively remains low. This is in alignment with the Mystery Tradition, in acting as custodian to such arcana, because few have the 'ears to hear' or 'eyes to see'.

But despite the Hermetic or insular quality such secrecy may imply, initiation remains an important praxis in service to society. It is like the advice of a good friend given at just the right moment.

Ritual Initiation - enacted - communicates the will to enter awareness more fully to all aspects of the being - thus spiritualizing the experience.
