Initiations certainly have proven to be effective to those who embraced them. The mystery associated with such endeavours plays an integral role in the process. It is that 'unknown' which provokes the first step into new knowledge. There are many kinds of initiation, but they all have to do with the expansion of consciousness and the grace that is derived from understanding.

Society at large can benefit from such activities, but the number of those who will seek initiation actively remains low. This is in alignment with the Mystery Tradition, in acting as custodian to such arcana, because few have the 'ears to hear' or 'eyes to see'.

But despite the Hermetic or insular quality such secrecy may imply, initiation remains an important praxis in service to society. It is like the advice of a good friend given at just the right moment.

Ritual Initiation - enacted - communicates the will to enter awareness more fully to all aspects of the being - thus spiritualizing the experience.
